In my work, I create relationships between texts, objects and actions as a means of modifying and reinforcing the associations already inherent in them. In a sense, I make object-based poems.
As a poet writes with words: utilizing their sense, sounds and the structure linking them, I write with objects and texts, employing their various qualities and the relationships between them. Content, media and method are carefully selected & integrated with one another such that the relationships formed within a piece inform the meanings carried by each constituent component and create a whole that is charged with potential for consideration of larger ideas.
Readings of the work are dependent on the association that viewers bring to it. The goal is not so much to make a clear statement as to stimulate thought and new understanding. While there are specific ideas and intentions behind each piece, ideally every viewer will bring something new in their viewing of it. The work is intended to be engaging on multiple levels such that one might be initially attracted by a visual or haptic quality, and then upon closer study, drawn into deeper observation and consideration of ideas. It is my intention that the work will engage and stimulate all types of art viewers: both those looking for depth and breadth of interpretation and those new to and/or unfamiliar with contemporary or conceptual practice. All readings are valid.
Media and methods recurring in my work include: poetry, knitting, common technologies, and systems of communication.
Issues brought to the fore by these juxtapositions include:
Specificity of meaning. Opening inherent associations and/or understandings to interpretation. Transforming intended meaning. Suggesting new associations. Exposing subtexts inherent in overt communication.
Perception of content by means of sight, sound and touch. Each in its own way colors associations and the interpretation of content.
Time continuity and discontinuity. Some ideas transcend time, some fade in a moment. A single object can carry associations tied to the present, as well as others that have carried on through centuries. The eternal colored by the here and now.
The presence of meaning. Where does meaning lie & at what point is meaning lost? The undeniable intrigue of knowing there is something hidden within. Overtly revealing hidden meanings. Rendering meaning wholly inaccessible while leaving suggestions of its presence.
